How Preppy Pink Survived the Deer

All through April it snowed, and, lacking green grass, the deer occasionally munched on the daylilies.  Some, like Preppy Pink, were pretty badly damaged, but Preppy Pink fought back.  Even though it was scheduled to bloom in July, it sent up very short scapes already in June, and they bloomed, the flowers nestled low to the ground among the plant's long green leaves.  In July, Preppy Pink sent up the usual tall scapes, and they bloomed, creating a multi-layered effect for this year's daylily season.
